Malaysia is fortunate to have people like Mohammad A. Quayum to ease the exchange of cultural, social, and literary values between itself and both its East Asian neighbours and those of the West that are farther removed. Qualified by his training, inclination, and talent, and with a particular interest in the history of ideas, Professor Quayum has demonstrated his ability to show Americans how to improve their understanding of Saul Bellow and Malaysians the riches of their own creative literature written in English. We should be clear about the importance of this. In a world where nationalism threatens to drive cultures and nations apart and into tribal, religious, or cultural warfare, the exchange of ideas and cultural values assumes an even greater importance.... In this moment of the world's history, people like Professor Quayum have much to teach us.

· Professor Eugene D. LeMire, Emeritus Professor of English, The Flinders University of South Australia

This is a most welcome collection of essays on Malaysian literature in English. Professor Mohammad A. Quayum, whose many earlier publications include In Blue Silk Girdle: Stories from Malaysia and Singapore (1998) and Malaysian Literature in English: A Critical Reader (2001), offers a probing examination of the opportunities and dilemmas faced by writers in the English language in Malaysia, as well as their many achievements, in this collection. The essays, interviews and biographical studies contained herein have been published in scholarly journals and books around the world, and it is cause for celebration that they are now accessible in this attractive volume.

· Professor John Chaffee, Director of Asian and Asian American Studies Programme, State University of New York at Binghamton, USA

Professor Mohammad A. Quayum has dedicated much of his distinguished academic career to the study of Malaysian Literature in English. His passion for the literary works and their authors is evident on every page of this book. In his quest to make known the achievements of Malaysia’s wordsmiths, Professor Quayum has published widely and extensively in journals, books, dictionaries, and encyclopaedias. The present volume brings together the valuable fruits of this study in one handy collection.
